south beach Apartment

Miami Beach,  Fl.

Taking a generic three-bedroom, 2 story apartment, we abandoned the restricting partitions in favor of an open plan design.  Rooms are minimized with the use of large sliding panels and doors.  With only the primary exposed concrete structural formwork left intact, the apartment was recreated as a series of alcoves.  Natural light emanating from the stairway ties together both floors together, giving the duplex an overall effect that is both serene and spacious.  A previously enclosed kitchen now ties seamlessly with the living room.  Its traditional cabinetry has been replaced with poured concrete counters and hanging teak storage modules that marry the exposed concrete floor and ceiling slabs.  In its cool simplicity the apartment is a retreat from often-intense heat and light of the urban sub tropics.
