Food@Science - THE PATRICIA AND PHILLIP FROST MUSEUM OF SCIENCE
Miami, FL
Located at the southern end of the Frost Science Museum, the café offers stunning views of Museum Park. With 15-foot-high ceilings, the space is bathed in natural light.
The dining area is anchored by a striking 40-foot-long oak-veneered plywood canopy. This architectural feature branches and weaves beneath the exposed concrete slab above, punctuated by orb-like pendant light fixtures that add a warm, modern touch.
A 16-foot-long lightbox frames the seating area, displaying a collage of imagery inspired by a broad range of themes, including biological and molecular systems, mapping, topography, infrastructure, circuitry, and space exploration. These images, compressed onto layers of printed acrylic and illuminated from behind, evoke the look of magnified samples viewed through a giant microscope.
The adjacent barista station features teak paneling and patterned hexagonal ceramic wall tiles that complement the warm tones of honey, wax, and oak found in the seating area. The iconic Grand Prix chairs, designed by Arne Jacobsen, further enhance the stylish and cohesive design.
This space was recognized with the 2018 Merit Award for Built Work by the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
