SURFSIDE RECREATION AND TENNIS CENTER

The Surfside Recreation and Tennis Center reimagines an existing municipal site as a modern recreation facility that supports the Town's growing demand for fitness, tennis, pickleball, and community programming. Located between Collins Avenue and Harding Avenue, the project occupies the block bounded by 87th and 88th Streets, integrating a new recreation center with the existing tennis courts and Veterans Memorial Park.

The building is organized to maximize the site's limited footprint while strengthening the relationship between indoor and outdoor public spaces. The ground floor includes administrative offices, public restrooms, and a flexible multi-purpose room designed to accommodate fitness classes, community events, and other public functions. A continuous wall of folding glass doors opens directly onto a plaza connecting the building to Veterans Memorial Park, allowing activities to extend outdoors and creating a natural gathering space.

The second floor houses a dedicated fitness and training area with strength and cardio equipment, as well as locker rooms, showers, and support spaces for users of the facility.

To preserve the existing tennis courts while expanding recreational opportunities, two pickleball courts are located on the roof level. The courts are supported by a cantilevered structure that extends over the tennis courts below, providing additional programming without increasing the building's footprint. Integrated lighting, wind screens, and shade structures support year-round use and enhance the experience for both players and spectators.
